ELIAS MARTINEZ, PhD, is a researcher at the Mexican Petroleum Institute (IMP) in the Biomass Conversion Division. He obtained his first-class degree in Chemical Engineering from the National Autonomous Univ. of Mexico (UNAM) and his PhD from the Univ. of Manchester. He then worked as a research fellow at the Univ. of Surrey and the Univ. of Oxford. He was then appointed as a lecturer in the department of chemical engineering at the Univ. of Bath before joining IMP. Martinez was the technical lead for the low-carbon chemicals criteria presented in the article. He is a co-author of the book Biorefineries and Chemical Processes — Design, Integration and Sustainability Analysis and multiple peer-reviewed journal publications. His areas of interest include decarbonization through waste and biomass processing in biorefineries, food-energy-water nexus, property and process modeling using artificial neural networks, lifecycle assessment, and sustainable  design. Martinez is a member of the National Researcher System in Mexico.
