Program Director
National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering

Dr. Rampulla is the Director of the Division of Discovery Science and Technology (Bioengineering) at the National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). He oversees a technical portfolio with the mission to develop modular platform technologies that manipulate and interface with biology to enable a new paradigm of clinical intervention for human health. Programs within the bioengineering division support novel biomaterials, biosensors/actuators, and various engineered systems, including robotic, bionic, and synthetic biological systems. He holds a B.S. from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University, both in Chemical Engineering. Dave was a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and has research experience in academia, government, and industry. His research career spanned both basic and applied sciences – from nano to bio – and the common thread throughout was investigating phenomena at surfaces and interfaces. As a former program director at the NIBIB, he managed programs in biomaterials and synthetic biology.
