(228a) Chemistry and Catalysis of Nano-Structured Carbides, Nitrides and Oxides

In this talk, I will discuss a group of low dimensional single and bi-metallic transition-metal carbides and nitrides, known as MXenes, as well as layered nano-structured oxides and oxynitrides. The topic will be H₂O chemistry, specifically the hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions, as well as the nitrogen reduction reaction. The focus will be on the relationship between the atomic-scale structure and chemistry of the respective material. These systems exhibit active sites with unique local geometric and electronic chemical environments. I will compare the similarities and differences between the considered transition-metal compound materials. In addition, our computational results will be compared to existing experimental data.
