(499a) Stakeholders Presentations: Presenting to the General Public

Students and professionals will need to present to varied audiences over their careers, but most undergraduate programs focus on presenting to peers and supervisors. We have required our students to make a stakeholders presentation in senior lab. They imagine that their companies want to build a plant that produces or uses a hazardous material. As the company's representative, they must present to city council to convince them that the plant will be safe and beneficial to the community. To prepare the students, we discuss the audience, what they might be expected to know of chemistry and engineering, and how the presentation needs to be different from a technical presentation to supervisor. Expectations and gradesheets will be presented.
