Personal reflections on Karl Jacob's contributions to powder technology, education in particle technology, and his dedication to being a life-long Packer Backer will be made. The main portion of this talk will be on new work using Magnetically Assisted Impact Coating (MAIC) with flow aids to enhance powder flow. Previous work will be reviewed and new results on the use of fumed silica and magnesium stearate as flow aids on acetominophen will be discussed. MAIC processed materials will be compared to samples prepared using v-blending and dual asymmetric centrifugal mixing methods. FT4, particle size distribution, and SEM characterizations methods will be used to describe the powder properties from each method. Results will be presented that show show enhanced powder flow using the MAIC process as opposed to the v-blending or centrifugal mixing methods with low levels of flow aids and converging powder flow enhancement of all application methods at higher flow aid application levels. Discussion of aging effects on flow aid usage will also be made.
