The Orr-Sommerfeld equation meets synthetic biology. Particle flocculation, when positioned in the proper flow field, solves a genetic problem. More appropriately, scientific rigor, when mixed with curiosity and creative thought, leads to societal solutions. When these are components of an education enterprise, contributions are amplified. This presentation builds on inspirations from Rob Davis and correspondingly, will highlight efforts from our laboratory that have been based on first principles, stretched our imaginations, and expanded disciplinary boundaries. Larvae that glow. Bacteria that talk. Redox information channels that connect biology to electronics.
