(350b) Student-Generated Wikis As an Assessment Tool

The transition to remote learning in 2020 and 2021 required educators to change their approach towards both teaching and assessment. For the latter, traditional methods such as quizzes and exams had to be thoughtfully administered because students were no longer physically present with the instructor and had a wide range of resources that they could potentially use to aid their responses. To address this, student-generated wikis were assigned in several courses (i.e. Material and Energy Balances, Thermo I and II, and Computer Simulation) and used as an assessment tool during remote learning. Briefly, students were asked to distill down what they learned into the most important points and concepts, and could demonstrate this by incorporating content from the internet (e.g. webpages, multimedia, etc) in combination with their own personal explanations. This approach leverages a student’s access to resources, relatively long time scale to complete the assignment, and generates a body of content that they may look back on as they progress through the chemical engineering curriculum. Student reaction to this assignment will be presented, as well as the activity’s role with respect to traditional assessments, and continued implementation in traditional face-to-face courses.
