Ozone is a powerful oxidant that activates C=C and C-H bonds even at ambient temperatures. However, challenges related to safety and reaction selectivity have prevented ozone from being adopted widely in industry. This talk will highlight how these challenges can be addressed using appropriate solvents and reactors. Facile oxidation of emerging feedstocks (fatty acid methyl esters in vegetable oils, lignins and light alkanes) to value-added chemical precursors by ozone will be presented.
