Accumulation of arsenic in the body is detrimental to health and directly leads to deadly cancerous and noncancerous diseases. Unfortunately, conventional methods are unable to effectively address selectivity and cost issues of arsenic removal in water. Previously, our lab developed engineered E. coli for As(III) bioaccumulation. To prevent secondary contamination a magnetic water filter was built with inspiration from membrane bioreactors. In this poster, I report the arsenic and bacterial removal efficiency of our filtration tank and discuss the potential of using engineered E. coli for arsenic and other metal removal.
