(186c) Modernizing Satisfaction of the ABET/Aiche Process Safety Criterion through an across-the-Curriculum Approach

In collaboration with AIChE, ABET specifies that that the curriculum of chemical, biochemical, biomolecular and similarly named engineering programs must include a unique program-specific criterion related to process safety. However, safety training of undergraduates is far from standardized, with one 2015 survey indicating that 23% of programs have a dedicated process safety class, implying that the balance of programs integrate this education into other core classes in their curricula. The latter strategy will be discussed in this presentation. NC State’s ChE program leverages SACHE modules, the Contents Under Pressure process safety decision making video game, and traditional safety-related problems to address the criteria. Discussions of assessment strategies and how the approach addresses the safety-related program criterion will be presented.
