Semiflexible colloidal filaments can be driven out of equilibrium with time-varying magnetic fields. Transitions between complex shapes serves for the microscopic manipulation of fluids and as model systems of active filaments. The dynamics of these systems can be described by the competition between viscous and magnetic forces during chain actuation, represented by the dimensionless Mason number. I will describe new chain dynamics by applying time-varying fields, characterized by a nonconstant field strength. Under such circumstances the chains bend, coils and stretch repeatedly because the relative importance between magnetic and viscous forces varies within a field period.
