The adsorption and reaction of molecules on surfaces modulates with the surface structure and electronic state, both of which can be modified via surface composition and design. But new experimental methods permit substantial condensation of charge up to one electron or hole per active site, dramatically modifying the properties of catalytic surfaces. In this presentation, methods for modifying metal and metal oxide surfaces are presented along with physical and electronic characterization to understand the fundamental differences between equilibrated and electronically biased surfaces. Experiments are compared with computed energies, and the existing insights into new surface chemistry behaviors are presented alongside emerging grand challenges in understanding and controlling charge condensation for catalytic chemistry.
