Clinoptilolite is a zeolite with HEU structure, and natural clinoptilolite has long been used in gas separation.

We ion-exchanged synthetic clinoptilolite with Sr and Na, and evaluated the correlation between the exchange ion composition and the adsorption rate of CH4 and N2.

When the Na exchange ratio exceeded 40%, the adsorption rate of CH4 decreased markedly and the adsorption of N2 decreased. It was considered that the ion-exchanged Na inhibited diffusion in the 10-membered ring pores of clinoptilolite, resulting in a decrease in the adsorption rate of CH4.

We have prepared a clinoptilolite CH4/N2 separating agent (1.5mmφ, cylinder shape) with a suppressed adsorption rate of CH4 without decreasing the adsorption amount of N2, and confirmed that it can dynamically separate CH4 and N2, by the difference in adsorption rate between CH4 and N2.

In this work, we will also discuss about the mechanism of control of CH4 adsorption rate, and other gas separation applications.
