(380b) Heterogeneous Catalysis for Pharmaceutical Scale Flow Processes

Heterogeneous catalysts in packed or trickle bed reactors offer the advantages of process intensification and streamlined telescoped processes for the manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients. Pharmaceutical scale applications allow working at lower flow rates with smaller catalyst particle sizes than typical petrochemical applications, and the corresponding high catalyst surface area per pressurized volume allows high throughput from comparatively small reactors, often with enhanced selectivity and reactivity relative to batch processes. Here we describe flow hydrogenations and mixed metal oxide catalyzed functional group transformations which illustrate these concepts.
