Catalytic Chemical Reaction Engineering has been at the forefront of the chemical engineering discipline and has led to many innovative approaches and subdisciplines. AIChE has recognized its importance which led the establishment of the Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Division in 1996.

After a short review of the history and present realizations of catalysis and chemical reaction engineering achievements, the focus will be on its future. The drive for sustainable products and processes has fueled the further development of this discipline. The need to use the earth’s limited resources carefully and the transition to renewable resources will continue to drive the development of catalysis and chemical reaction engineering.
