A various of Cu-loaded BEA zeolites are prepared through wet impregnation method. The Cu-BEA zeolites show high performances for adsorbing and low-temperature oxidizing hydrocarbons (HCs; toluene and propene) during cold-start period (CST) and, especially, 5 wt.% of Cu loaded BEA zeolite has the best efficiency. To achieve high efficiency from cold start test, high adsorbed amount of propene and oxidation of HCs at low temperature are needed. It is noticeable that the amount of Cu+ ions have correlation to the adsorbed amount of propene. Add to this, tiny (ca. 1-2 nm) copper oxide particles at the surface of BEA zeolite could lower the oxidation temperature. Furthermore, hydrothermal treatment at 800 °C under wet condition with varying time (3-24 h) was adjusted to test stability of HC trap; the CST results show that the adsorbed amount of propene was dramatically decreased with treatment time increasing, but for toluene were still well adsorbed and oxidation ability is also maintained.
