(462e) Innovation Challenges in Solids Processing at Industrial Scales

Survival and sustained growth of any business in the current environment of global market driven economies hinges on innovation and rapid adaptation. It is difficult to open a business magazine without hearing this buzzword. However, innovation is often confused with invention. While invention refers to new ideas or concepts generated through creative thought process and/or scientific research, innovation implies bringing them to market (generating value) and making a difference in people’s lives. The difference is exemplified by the plethora of patents and the relative paucity of true innovations. Innovations do not always have to be breakthrough or game changing. They can be incremental and significant as long as the value generation outweighs the associated costs. Marketing pressures and the need for product differentiation often leads to namesake innovations with no tangible value. A better strategy would be to implement a few outstanding innovations rather than a smattering of mediocre ones.

This presentation, based on author’s experiences and that of his peers, will highlight the challenges associated with innovation in solids processing at industrial scales. Practical aspects and best practices for being a successful innovator will be discussed.
