(655a) Decarbonizing the Skies – Technology Development for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Authors

Vardon, D. - Presenter, National Renewable Energy Lab
Decarbonizing the aviation sector remains a critical need that requires low-carbon intensity, fungible, liquid hydrocarbon fuels, commonly referred to as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This talk will address technology development and scale-up efforts at Alder Fuels for producing SAF, with a focus on biogenic waste conversion pathways that produce drop-in hydrocarbon biofuel. Motivation for expanding SAF feedstocks beyond fats, oil, and grease will be addressed, as well as Alder’s strategy to generate low carbon biocrude oil that is compatible with downstream hydroprocessing within the existing refinery infrastructure. Technical findings will be presented on Alder’s process engineering and scale-up work conducted jointly with the Department of Energy and industry partners. Jet fuel property considerations will be discussed for guiding SAF process development, as well as approaches to meet ASTM specifications while increasing the renewable blend content of jet fuel towards 100% SAF.
