A biphasic system consisting of DES pretreatment and organic solvent was used for simultaneous switchgrass fractionation and conversion. High furfural yield was achieved from the one-pot reaction. The solid residue was rich in cellulose, which was readily processed into fermentable sugars and nanocellulose. Lignin was recovered with a high purity, showing low molecular weight and good reactivity. The solvent system also showed good recyclability and reusability. This study provided a novel solvent system and approach for lignocellulose fractionation and direct conversion of furfural from lignocellulose.
