In 2022, the NIST sponsored development projects to address readiness against future disruptions to the U.S. supply chain due to pandemics or conflicts. RAPID, a Manufacturing USA Institute aligned to the process industries, was awarded a grant to support the development of methodologies to accelerate process technology development. The project created a national Center of Excellence for Process Technology Development (CoE) at AVN Corporation’s location in South Charleston, WV that combines facilities, equipment and technical expertise to develop and demonstrate process technologies. The CoE is a new resource that supports the acceleration of Sustainable designs while managing costs and leveraging other resources. The CoE uses pilot scale modules that can be configured to develop and demonstrate sustainable processes and validate their metrics. The CoE successfully validated the modular pilot plant concept by demonstrating a decarbonized, continuous process to produce a pharmaceutical raw material.

This talk will focus on the opportunities to reduce development cost and time to market for Sustainable technologies through the use of flexible, modular pilot plants such as are available at the CoE.
