Carbon negative and energy efficient technologies that could reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are among the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Therefore, developing processes and technologies with low GHG emissions to meet growing energy demand and to produce chemical and materials in a sustainable manner is of great significance. Multifunctional catalysts with atomically dispersed active centers are highly desirable in advancing the development of sustainable processes and technologies with atom economic and environmentally friendly methods for the production of chemicals and materials. However, how to precisely construct active catalytic sites with precisely defined coordination environment having favorable structure at the atomic level to achieve targeted products remains challenging. Whatâs more challenging is how to mass produce advanced catalyst materials with highly active centers. In this talk, I will first describe how we achieved multifunctional catalysts with good catalytic performance for CO2 conversion, clean energy production and waste valorization. Then I will talk about how use-inspired basic research is coupled with accelerated catalyst development platform to accelerate the development of the emerging technology, and shorten the time from lab to market.
