(418c) Processing Challenges Impacting Completion of Radioactive Waste Processing at the Savannah River Site

Lambert, D. - Presenter, Savannah River National Laboratory
The Savannah River Site now has all the processing facilities needed for processing the high and low activity radioactive waste needed for emptying the 43 remaining active waste tanks and closing down the processing facilities when this mission is complete. But the site also wants to process as much spent nuclear fuel to combine with the SRS waste before shutting down these facilities. So SRS has the challenge of finding processing conditions suitable for simultaneously optimizing H Canyon fuel dissolution, sludge and salt preparation, the Defense Waste Processing Facility, the Salt Waste Processing Facility, the Saltstone Processing Facility and the recycle/effluent treatment facilities at processing rates that haven't been achieved to date in spite of the limited lag storage. Any slowdown or shutdown of one of these facilities leads to the idling of all of these facilities. The challenges of optimizing the processing of these facilities and the likely bottlenecks will be discussed.
