Is it possbile to breathe for extended periods without needing to replace an oxygen tank and rebreather during professional scuba diving? How can we conceptualize, prototype, and validate an integrated electrolyzer-scrubber system capable of simultaneous O2 generation from seawater and COÂ2 capture from a diverâs breath for practical scuba diving applications, thereby replacing conventional O2 tank and rebreathers? My core basic-energy-science research involves leveraging advances in electrochemical engineering, ion transport phenomena, and materials science to design and implement sustainable real-life applications.
Electrochemistry offers potential for sustainable and green approaches. However, understanding detailed reaction mechansims and kinetics, system cost, and long-term stability of electrochemical systems is necessary to achieve real-life impact. I plan to leverage my multidisciplinary background and expertise in synthesizing nanomaterials, in-depth analysis, and applying advanced technological solutions for the following important applications: bipolar membrane electrolyzers, electrodialysis, nitrogen electrochemistry, electrochemical fuel generation and oxidation, CO2 capture, and energy storage (Fig. 1).
