End-of-semester student ratings are the most commonly used metric for the evaluation of teaching for tenure decisions. However, these ratings, although valuable, are insufficient measures of effective teaching. We have developed a new methodology – The Teaching Portfolio and Peer Review – to provide a more substantial and informative evaluation of teaching to be used in the tenure process. This is being institutionalized across our university and is not only providing better evaluations of teaching in the tenure process but is also encouraging efforts to improve teaching and learning. This methodology may be useful for other academic institutions who are striving to elevate the standing of teaching in the tenure process.
