The development of new manufacturing process technology is critical for more efficient and responsible use of global natural resources, which is essential for growth and a sustainable future. However, developing new manufacturing process technology can be uncertain and goes beyond taking an idea or need and translating it into technical information, with aim for commercialization. This presentation will highlight learnings from developing process technology for manufacturing fluorocarbon molecules with low global warming potential (GWP). These molecules are essential components of refrigerant blends, heat transfer media, propellants, solvents, and foam-blowing agents. The challenges and strategies involved in process development, process technology portfolio management, stakeholder engagement, and information exchange will be explored. Ideally, process technology development is proactive, building a technology portfolio well before specific needs arise.
