(552c) Model-Supported Batch Reaction Scale-up of Energetic Material Synthesis

Understanding the heat transfer properties of a system are critical for a safe and effective transition from the laboratory to the pilot plant to full-scale manufacturing. This presentation will detail how to use modeling techniques to predict the behavior of an experiment as it is scaled-up. By determining the heat flow for a specified reaction and the heat transfer properties of a reaction vessel, a series of steps can be followed in order to assess the exotherm or endotherm of the reaction. Exothermic reactions that advance to the large-scale without proper evaluation pose the risk of heavy consequences if there is an uncontrolled increase in temperature. This lecture will discuss how to use predictive modeling to gauge the safety of future experiments given the researched reaction and equipment system at the small-scale.
