Refractory linings which typically cost roughly 5% of a new furnace build are often after-thoughts by many. Whether the lining is new or approaching it’s end of service life, any issues with refractory performance or reliability can easily result in much larger potential liabilities and painful profit loss. Small potential upgrades and attention to product quality, design and installation details are extremely important to address, especially when considering a retrofit.

This paper will outline real case histories where alternative refractory systems have been proposed, accepted and installed for improved performance and reliability.
