This paper will provide a broad overview of important concepts that researchers and innovators should be aware of when developing new techniques that may be patentable or could potentially infringe another patent. The subject matter will range from introductory material such as defining the different parts of a patent to intermediate material including legal concepts often argued in intellectual property litigation including claim construction, infringement, and validity. Examples of these issues in the context of actual patent litigation cases relevant to chemical engineers will be provided to help connect the concepts to engineering practice.
