Silicones exhibit many useful characteristics, including low thermal conductivity, low chemical reactivity, low toxicity, high thermal stability, resistance to oxygen and UV, high resistance to weathering, low surface tension and capable of wetting most surfaces. Formulating silicone-based material in solid form can often be a challenge as they tend to spread over the surface of any powder. This paper will review some of the approaches that Dow has followed to formulate silicone-based foam control agents used in detergent powders and hydrophobic agents used in the construction industry.
