(57al) Rethinking Vision 20/20 in Context of Bridging Chemical Engineering (Risk Based Process Safety) to the Humanities - When Chemical Engineers Meet Philosophy and Intercultural Communication

Authors

CCPS presented its Risk Based Process Safety (RBPS) approach to the industries in 2007, and after another several years' efforts, in 2014, formally issued its Vision 20/20, to which the author later helped do a heart surgery, i.e. rationalised an inevitable ethical dimension at 12th GCPS.

In this paper, the author first points out that Risk Based Process Safety (RBPS) seems just a nickname, probably the most important one, of Chemical Engineering, so does the title "Process Safety Practitioner(s)" toward Chemical Engineer(s). Then, the author argues that some newly identified, or fundamentally re-defined, RBPS Mega Elements (i.e. RBPS Core Value, Process Safety Cultural Communication, Espionage, etc.) & their relevant activities should be deemed as the "unprecedented" thoughts and practices not only of chemical engineering design process (including the whole 4th Pillar Learn from Experience) but, more generally, of engineering design process (including engineering failure diagnosis) at large. And upon all mentioned above, the author attempts to correlate/compare CCPS Vision 20/20 with "The Two Cultures" challenge set by C. P. Snow and with those efforts of bridging engineering to the humanities, so that CCPS Vision 20/20 could be examined further, the relationships between Chemical Engineering and its universal value (i.e. RBPS Core Value) & democratic constitution (i.e. Process Safety Cultural Communication) more explicitly discussed, and human being's new era of (chemical) engineering design process and diagnosis (accident investigation, prevention & "Learn from Experience") predicted.

The author's conclusion: CCPS Vision 20/20's "enlightened" future would be going beyond instrumental rationality, embracing Chemical Engineering's universal value and democratic constitution, those modern but subtler extensions of the "traditional" ones, and pursuing human being's "new and complete" engineering design process & failure diagnosis.
