Mankind has always been in the quest of understanding reality in various ways. Various perception methods allow for investigating different aspects of the same object. In industry setting, virtual reality is immensely impacting the time and cost of delivering the products in the design and planning stages by creating complete immersive mockups for collaborative decision making. Augmented reality on the other hand is useful during execution, service and performance evaluation of exiting plants to keep operators trained on orientation, safely handle equipment and access information.
In this talk, we will give an overview of what the current status of technical capabilities are with immersive technologies. Benefits and values delivered by AR/VR will be discussed with the help of examples. At the end, we will discuss what the trends (hybridization of AR and VR to create mixed reality or MR) and future (Extended reality or ER) holds.
