Conventional roller shutter doors can become hazardous debris when subjected to blast loading. To mitigate this hazard, Gliderol and ABS Group are developing a blast-resistant roller shutter door. The two-phase development includes finite element analysis (FEA) to design the door system and pneumatic shock tube testing to validate the design. The first phase included analysis of the concept and performance testing of door components to gather data necessary to develop an FEA model of the entire door. The second phase entails detailed design development, FEA modeling of the entire door and shock tube testing of the full-scale door system.

In this paper, details of the second phase design and full-scale blast testing are discussed. Design blast loads and structural performance requirements are presented. Candidate geometries considered for door system are described along with connections and anchorage configurations. FEA modelling techniques for capturing large deflections and dynamic response are discussed. Finally, results from the FEA modelling are compared to results from full-scale blast testing using a shock tube.
