(18c) IEC 62443 Flows into IEC 61511

Cybersecurity has become an ubiquous topic, therefore it is no surprise it made its way into the safety standards, it is also not a surprise that there are still some confusions on how to incorporate cybersecurity requirement into our safety applications.

The most recent version of the IEC 61511, Functional safety – Safety instrumented systems for the process industry sector in its Part 1, Framework, definitions, system, hardware and application programming requirements bring a new clause, defining that a risk assessment shall be carried out, therefore not an optional activity, and as a note it suggests both ISA-TR84.00.09-017, Cybersecurity Related to the Functional Safety Lifecycle and the IEC 62443-2-1, Industrial communication networks – Network and system security – Part 2-1: Establishing an industrial automation and control system security program, it is therefore natural that anyone involved in Process Safety projects, especially related to Safety Instrumented System deployment, start to get familiarized with the cybersecurity related standards.

The objective of this session is to bring some information about both standards, and where can they converge in order to provide compliance, while demystifying a number of concepts along the way.
