Combustible dusts generated in the processing facilities can pose fire and explosion hazards to the employees and public. Effectively controlling toxic and combustible dust is essential to prevent devastating fires and explosions. This paper examines the dangers of combustible dusts, applicable regulatory guidelines and how to conduct a risk-based Dust Hazard Analysis. NFPA 652 allows a performance-based approach for dust hazards analysis and control. Risk-based analysis provides a way to demonstrate that a performance-based option achieves an acceptable level of protection.
