Internal engineering standards programs are beneficial for many reasons, the most obvious of which is that they allow a facility to clarify and expand upon published Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP) to account for their facility-specific needs. By utilizing an internal engineering standards program, facilities can minimize in-service equipment failures, reduce front-end design efforts, and have a consistent set of engineering standards within the facility and/or organization that optimize the equipment lifecycle.
Another more often overlooked benefit to an internal engineering standards program is the resource it provides in training the next generation within your facility and/or organization. This paper will discuss how to incorporate design, operational, and safety lessons learned into your engineering standards, involve engineers of all experience levels in your program, and expand overall expertise through your internal standards program.
