Ethylene Plant Maintenance & Reliability

The maintenance shutdown of a flare supporting an ethylene production unit is challenging in several ways. Operating units continue to extend their time between major outages; thus, the same holds for flares. Flares are generally the last equipment to be taken âout of serviceâ, and the first one required to be back in service during these outages. This makes the time allowed for any flare maintenance is short and critical. Multipoint ground flares (MPGF) have become more the norm as the main flare equipment for ethylene plants. As a result, planning for these types of units is different than for elevated flares. MPGF are more complex with many different types of parts. Some items can be maintained outside of a turnaround, while others are only available during the outage.
This paper examines the overall maintenance strategy for MPGF, focusing on the turnaround planning to work toward a successful outcome.
