(118a) Decarbonization Roadmap Methodology and Case Study for Petrochemical Facilities

Authors

The petrochemical industry is a large emitter of carbon dioxide but is a “difficult-to-decarbonize” sector. The life cycle emissions are attributed to a combination of sources including upstream, fuel-related, electricity generation, industrial process and downstream product use. Achieving net-zero is an ambitious goal that requires careful planning and implementation.

The paper explores corporate decarbonate strategies to achieve 2030 and 2050 goals. Energy efficiency, electrifications, feedstock switching and CCUS are investigated. A methodology is outlined to develop unique approaches for companies and facilities. Practical technologies will be reviewed and a process to deem their applicability to specific sites is discussed. A sample marginal cost abate curves is shared. A methodology to develop and optimized implementation schedule is discussed.
