The distillation columns are used globally in the industries. Some columns are simple with two compounds and several columns are complex in nature processing multicomponent system. The presentation will explain theory behind the design of the distillation tower using K value and relative volatility. Effect and design considerations of several process parameters such as pressure, reflux ratio, pump around requirement etc. on the design of distillation column is explained. Stepwise tower optimization techniques are illustrated. A procedure to simulation a tower using a process simulator is discussed. Setting up a complex column using a process simulation and steps to converge the simulation is discussed.
