Distillation is involved in every one of the factions of the Process Industries (PI), from Oil & Gas, through Refining, Petrochemicals and Specialty Chemicals, as well as the bio-process industry. In spite of the very long history of design and operations of these unit operations, there is a recurring theme of misapplied process & mechanical designs and sub-optimal control structures which result in poor and/or under-performing process units.

This paper reviews many of the common mistakes encountered by the authors and the remedies which address them.
