(8a) Flammability Basics

Authors

Chastain, J. - Presenter, Eastman Chemical Company
Fire is likely the most important chemical reaction mastered by humankind, but also represents one of the most common hazards present in the chemical and petrochemical industries. Most of the materials that we process pose hazards due to their flammability. This tutorial will cover the basics of flammability that should be understood by any engineer working in the area of process safety. The presentation will cover all common parameters used for the classification and evaluation of the flammability of materials. The fundamentals of flammability will be covered including information that will provide insight into the mechanism of fire providing attendees with insight that will allow a deeper understanding of the hazards of combustible materials and better decision making when dealing with these hazards.
