(106c) An Unanticipated Career Path

A profession can be like a mirage, as things aren’t always as they seem to be. Emerging from school with a degree, you imagine a long and successful career. This might be with a particular company, or in a certain industry. Perhaps one of your parents or a relative worked in one organization until they retired. Why can’t this be true for you too?

A career rarely unfolds the way you envision it. Your professional development affects how you might want to progress. You must respond to organizational changes, economic influences, business situations, and more. There is an opportunity with every left turn presented to you. How can you further your work aspirations despite these challenges?

In this presentation, the speaker will explain how her chemical engineering career has been anything but predictable. She will share tips on rebounding from adversity and using her experience, developed skills, networking, and role models to evolve her work responsibilities. She will reveal how her historical assignments contributed to her diverse capabilities in process safety and her passion to support and mentor facilities and organizations to maintain their hazardous processes safely and compliantly.
