(120c) Nuclear Smrs for Combined Heat and Power in the Process Industries

Authors

Curtis, M., The Dow

This presentation explores the integration of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) for combined heat and power (CHP) solutions in chemical manufacturing facilities. As the global push for sustainable and consistent energy intensifies, SMRs emerge as a compelling solution, offering a stable, low-carbon, and efficient power source. In chemical manufacturing, where both heat and electricity are in constant demand, the application of SMRs for CHP can significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance overall process economics. Using Dow case studies including initial learnings from the Seadrift project, we will highlight the specific advantages of SMRs over traditional energy sources, including their compactness, scalability, and safety features. We will cover the technical aspects of different SMR designs and how it makes them more or less suitable for use in the chemical industry. Embracing nuclear technology in the chemical industry not only supports environmental commitments but also promises a resilient and economically viable energy future. Join us to explore the transformative potential of SMRs in advancing sustainable chemical manufacturing.
