The purification of chemical compounds is key to so many consumer products that determine our standard of living and quality of life. These purification steps could be energy intensive. Electrification has been touted as a means of reducing the fossil-based energy consumption of these processes. There are other ways of reducing the energy consumption. In this presentation several case studies will be discussed to show how alternative separation technologies can significantly reduce energy consumption. Coupling these technologies with electrification and other CO2 reduction strategies could potentially present more economical alternatives than the one-size-fits-all strategies that are being considered.
