(174a) Accelerating the Engineering of Sustainable Processes through the Next Generation of Process Simulation

Authors

Globally the process industries are facing imperatives to address environmental changes caused by chemical process manufacturing. We are promoting hydrogen as an alternative fuel that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and a circular economy to reduce waste.

New processes must be put in place in the next decades which will require an acceleration of the engineering, design, and commissioning of these new plants to meet government objectives. AVEVA's new Process Simulation platform can help address a digital transformation of process engineering that are difficult to achieve with mainstream single-purpose process simulation tools to address these sustainability imperatives:

1) An open modeling approach to shorten the development time of a new "renewables" model library for wind, solar, electrolysis, pyrolysis, to model the hydrogen value chain in mainstream process flowsheet simulation and deploy circular processes.

2) An Engineering "Digital Twin" that accelerates the engineering of the new plants by allowing collaboration of process engineering with other engineering disciplines beyond the process world to verify equipment, piping, and control design through hydraulic analysis and dynamic simulation.

3) An Operations "Digital Twin" that reuses the engineering process models online to minimize their equivalent greenhouse gas emissions, possibly augmented by data-driven models that use Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
