(20c) Facility Siting Study for Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS) Onshore Hubs.


The development of Onshore Hubs for Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) involves a centralized facility where captured carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from various sources are collected, processed, and stored. While CCUS technology has the potential to mitigate climate change, CCUS Onshore Hubs pose certain hazards and challenges. Performing facility siting study for CCUS Onshore Hubs is crucial during the early stages of project to determine the safe location of the hubs and minimize potential risks to nearby local communities.

However, the availability of process parameters at the early project stage presents a challenge in providing reliable consequence modelling results, which may lead to delays in project execution. Hence, typical hazard distances for CCUS streams were established based on various operating conditions through consequence modeling. These typical hazard distances are utilized as references for CCUS projects for facility siting requirements to provide a preliminary proposal for the safe location of CCUS Onshore Hubs. This paper presents the methodology used for facility siting and the resultant consequence modelling contours based on various key parameters.
