(21b) Sharing SABIC Learning from Real-World Incidents in Developing Emergency Isolation Valves Standard to Enhance SABIC Emergency Repose Capabilities

Learning from process safety incidents is a critical aspect of enhancing SABIC safety and preventing incidents. This abstract discusses SABIC experience developing engineering standard for emergency isolation valves (EIVs) to enhance emergency repose on new & existing SABIC facilities and minimize risk of incident escalation. By analyzing past incidents and drawing on industry best practices, the new standard aims to provide comprehensive guidelines for the design, selection, installation, of EIVs. Gap analysis (with respect to the new standard) have been conducted on multiple SABIC existing facilities and many gaps have been found such as missing EIV, EIV not fireproofed, accessibility issues, ..etc. This abstract will further share SABIC learning from real-world incidents, approach to address EIVs issues and the results. Ultimately, this will benefit process safety community & chemical industry to improve emergency response capabilities and reduce the likelihood of catastrophic incidents escalation.
