(55ac) Integrated PHAs, Bowties and Barrier Management

Abstract – Integrated PHAs, Bowties and Barrier Management

Over many decades, various industries have been faced with the challenge of managing major accident hazards. Efforts have been made by difference disciplines and industry experts by utilizing multiple layers of protections coupled with the use of data to achieve a robust program that helps prevent or mitigate the consequence of major accident hazards.

This workshop will be focused on how to link the outputs of Process Hazard Analysis with Bowties , linking the barriers on bowties to their respective performance standards which are in-turn entered into a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and ultimately linked with barrier health system dashboard which is used to monitor the health of every barrier. We shall also be discussing the process of managing deviations of the barrier health from the criteria set up in their respective performance standards. The overall program can be broken into 5 major steps:

  1. Conducting a hazard identification to identify Major Accident Hazards (MAH) and integrate the MAH into a bowtie model
  2. Define Performance Standard Assurance Tasks (PSAT) by identifying the preventative and mitigative barriers
  3. Integrate the PSAT into Computerized Maintenance Maintenance System (CMMS)
  4. Monitor, Analyze and improve the health of barriers.
  5. Manage abnormal conditions of barriers.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to link your PHA with Bowties and monitor the health of your barriers. In addition to this goal, you will also be able to achieve the following objectives:-

  • Identify what can go wrong at your facility
  • Identify what can protect you when something goes wrong at your facility
  • Verify the health of the barriers at your facility
