(63c) Metal Dust - Not Just Another Combustible Dust

The chemical process industry has been designing safe handling methods for combustible dust for at least 90 years. Whether dust is generated in milling operations, or introduced as a raw material, it is generally done in a safe manor. The primary control methods used are housekeeping, inerting and removal of ignition as well as fire protection systems.

Metal dust, whether it is in the metalworking, recycling or additive manufacturing not only has its unique control methods, but there are also specific standards and guidelines for prevention control and mitigation of the hazards. These dusts also have unique properties that even sampling and testing pose unique challenges. Additive manufacturing is a rapidly growing industry and moving into classrooms and the amount of storage of raw materials is increasing at a phenomenal rate.

This paper identifies the best practices for control methods and improvements to safe handling.
