(6a) Emerging Process Development Areas for Converting Sustainable Feedstocks into Low Carbon Transportation Fuels

For accelerating decarbonization in the transport sector, there is an urgent need for transitioning the currently used largely fossil-based energy mixture into one which should be predominantly of sustainable origin. Appropriate processes need to be developed for converting various future sustainable feedstocks such as biomass and captured CO₂ to produce different types of low carbon transportation fuels. Knowledge gained during earlier transitions as well as novel innovations will be required for developing these processes. After providing an overview on the status of the technologies required, this talk will present examples where significant commercialization success has been achieved leveraging earlier knowledge. The presentation will then focus on a couple of selected cases where further innovations and improvements will be required for their successful deployments. Directional guidelines for bringing these improvements will also be covered in this talk.
