Distillation is widely recognized as the cornerstone of mass transfer processes due to its remarkable versatility and extensive application in the chemical and process industries. In distillation column design, the accurate prediction of liquid/vapor distribution, tray/packing hydraulics, scale-up effect, and other factors is pivotal, as they profoundly influence the performance of column internals. Nevertheless, the study of these phenomena faces many limitations in small-scale laboratory columns, primarily due to the substantial disparities in the 'shape of a theoretical stage' between laboratory and industrial-scale distillation research. Fractionation Research, Inc (FRI) has been at the forefront of industrial-scale distillation research since 1952. This presentation will delve into the significance of industrial-scale distillation studies, shedding light on the challenges and complexities that accompany such research endeavors. Moreover, it will outline the measures and solutions devised to tackle these challenges and capitalize on the opportunities presented in large-scale distillation studies. Furthermore, we will discuss the significance and influence of research in industrial-scale distillation on energy efficiency and sustainability.
